On the 28th of October 2023 we were guests of the Festival della Scienza in Genova 2023 edition.
Prof. Flavia Libonati gave a speech to a general audience on ‘Bones and the passing of time’ in the fantastic setting of the University Library of Genoa.
We were thrilled to engage with a very interested and curious audience and to have had the opportunity to disseminate our scientific research outside the scientific community.
From the 9th to the 12th of July 2023, we participated in the 28th Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB), held in Maastricht (The Netherlands). Dr. Linda Ravazzano presented the poster ‘Investigation of the impact of nanoscale geometry on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite platelets’ in the session “Hard tissue biomechanics”. In our work, we focused on the effect of ageing on hydroxyapatite crystals, the bone building blocks responsible for the mineral part of the bone tissue. We took advantage of the stage offered by the ESB conference to present our preliminary results on the variation of hydroxyapatite mechanical properties with surface compounds, size and water content obtained through Molecular Dynamics simulations. From the 13th to the 15th of October 2022 we participated to the XXII Congress of the Società Italiana dell’Osteoporosi del Metabolismo Minerale e delle Malattie dello Scheletro (SIOMMMS), held in Bari (Italy). On this occasion, Prof. Flavia Libonati presented the poster ‘Ageing effects on the mechanical properties of bone tissue: a nanoscale investigation’, winning the ‘Best Poster Presentation Award’.
